Elbow sleeves are thick, stretchy sleeves that cover the whole elbow joint. They add compression and keep the elbow warm, so it feels more stable under heavy pressing: bench press, overhead press, dips, skull crushers and heavy curls. To get the most from them, size them by arm circumference, centre them on the elbow crease, and keep doing a proper warm-up.

What elbow sleeves do, and what they do not

  • Compression: a snug sleeve supports the elbow and helps it feel stable as you lower and press the bar.
  • Warmth: the thick material keeps the joint warm between sets, which you notice in cold, air-conditioned gyms.
  • Confidence: many lifters feel their elbow position more clearly.

They do not replace good technique, a warm-up or sensible progression, and they are not medical devices. If your elbow hurts during or after training, stop, rest and see a doctor or physiotherapist before you go heavy again.

How to size elbow sleeves

A loose sleeve slides down mid-set; one that is too tight is hard to pull on and can leave your hand numb.

  1. With your arm relaxed and straight, measure around the arm at the elbow with a soft tape.
  2. If you are between sizes, go smaller for heavy pressing and more compression, larger for long sessions or bigger arms.

Fittergear Elbow Sleeves Pro (arm circumference): S 27–32 cm, M 33–36 cm, L 37–40 cm, XL 41–48 cm.

The orange Fittergear Weight Lifting Elbow Sleeves use a different chart: M 27–30 cm, L 31–34 cm, XL 35–38 cm. The same letter does not mean the same fit across the two models, so always go by the numbers.

How to put them on, step by step

  1. Open the adjustable strap fully first so the sleeve pulls on easily.
  2. Slide your hand through and pull the sleeve up by its body, not the strap.
  3. Centre it on the elbow, with roughly equal coverage of the lower upper arm and the upper forearm.
  4. Smooth out wrinkles in the elbow crease; they pinch in dips and curls.
  5. Tighten the strap once it is in place: firm enough to feel the compression, loose enough to fully bend and straighten without numbness.
  6. Do 5–10 unloaded arm bends or an empty-bar set. If it slides, reposition it; if it always slides, size down.

Numbness, tingling or a cold hand means it is too tight: loosen or remove it right away.

Exercises to wear elbow sleeves for

Sleeves help most when the elbow bends under heavy load. Put them on once warm-up sets get meaningful.

Bench press

  1. Lie with your eyes under the bar, grip slightly wider than shoulders, pull your shoulder blades back and down.
  2. Feet flat, unrack the bar to straight arms over your shoulders.
  3. Breathe in and lower the bar under control to your lower chest, elbows about 45–70 degrees from your torso rather than flared out at 90.
  4. Press up, keeping wrists stacked over elbows, to lockout.

Mistake: flaring the elbows straight out and bouncing the bar off the chest.

Overhead press

  1. Stand feet hip-width, bar on the front of your shoulders, elbows under or just in front of it. Brace abs and glutes.
  2. Press straight up, then push your head through once the bar passes your forehead.
  3. Lock out overhead and lower the bar to your shoulders under control.

Mistake: leaning back hard to grind out a weight that is too heavy.

Dips

  1. Support yourself on parallel bars with arms straight and shoulders pressed down, away from your ears.
  2. Lower slowly until your upper arms are about parallel to the floor. Lean forward for more chest, stay upright for more triceps.
  3. Press back up to straight arms.

Once you can do 10–12 solid bodyweight reps, add load with the Fittergear Dip Belt with steel chain. It sits around the waist, about 84 by 18 cm, with 2 mm foam padding and a 5 mm chain. Start with a small plate.

Mistake: sinking so deep the shoulders roll forward, then bouncing out of the bottom.

Skull crushers

  1. Lie on a bench holding an EZ bar or dumbbells over your chest, arms straight.
  2. Keep your upper arms still and bend the elbows to lower the weight to your forehead or just behind your head.
  3. Extend back up with your triceps, without swinging from the shoulders.

Mistake: elbows drifting wide and going so heavy that the upper arms swing.

Heavy curls

  1. Stand tall holding a barbell or dumbbells with palms up, arms straight at your sides.
  2. Pin your elbows to your sides and curl the weight all the way up, squeezing at the top.
  3. Lower slowly until your arms are almost straight, then start the next rep.

Mistake: swinging the torso and letting the arm snap straight at the bottom.

Common mistakes with elbow sleeves

  • Skipping the warm-up. Sleeves hold heat but do not prepare your muscles. Still do arm circles, empty-bar sets and gradual jumps.
  • Too tight, all session. Loosen between long rests.
  • Poor position. A sleeve that has slid onto the forearm does little. Re-centre it each set.
  • Training through pain. If your elbow hurts, stop, rest and see a professional.
  • Washing them wrong. Hand-wash the orange model in plain water, no detergent, no long soak, and air-dry out of direct sun.

Training legs too? The same logic applies; see our knee sleeves guide.

FAQ

Should I wear elbow sleeves for every exercise?

No. Wear them for heavy elbow work such as bench press, dips and skull crushers, and loosen them for everything else.

Elbow sleeves or wrist wraps?

Different jobs: sleeves add compression and warmth at the elbow, wraps keep the wrist stable under the bar. Many lifters wear both.

What if my elbow still hurts with sleeves on?

Stop that exercise, rest, and see a doctor or physiotherapist. Elbow sleeves are training support, not a medical device.
